Day 3 · Friday

Federal Jurisdiction and Procedure on the Louisiana Bar Exam

11 teaching unitsNon-Code subject2:00 PM–5:00 PM

This is how a case gets into, and moves through, a federal court: subject-matter and personal jurisdiction, venue and removal, the Federal Rules of pleading, discovery, and summary judgment, plus Erie. It's LCCP's federal cousin, and just as mechanical: the answers turn on gates, rules, and clocks.

Where it sits on the exam

  • Day 3 (Friday), 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the longer afternoon session.
  • Tested by multi-part essay questions, and in recent years about 10 multiple-choice questions as well.
  • One of 4 non-Code subjects. The five Code subjects count double the four non-Code subjects toward your score.

What it tests

The questions walk a case through federal court and test the threshold gates, is it properly here, over the right defendant, in the right district?, and the Rule-based mechanics that follow.
